This moved me, but I wasn’t sure if I would post it. Then I heard about Trump wanting to see Obama’s grades.
I don’t happen to think Trump is sincere enough about anything to be a committed racist, but he’s clearly playing with racism. For me, that makes him more toxic than some scared, dumb Klansman in the aftermath of Reconstruction.
Some relevant background from Hendrik Hertzberg in the latest New Yorker:
In the weeks since his proto-campaign began, Trump has talked of many things. Of energy policy, for example: “We need to seize Iraq’s oil fields.” Of China: “Our enemies.” Of abortion rights: “I’m pro-life.” (He used to be pro-choice, but, as one of his top aides noted the other day, “people change their positions all the time, the way they change their wives.”) Of health policy: “I will fight to end Obamacare.” (He used to be for a universal single-payer system, but that was then.) Of taxes: “It’s part of my speech. No new taxes.”
What a completely unserious jackass of a human being. I respect enough Republicans to believe that the GOP can do so much better than Trump.
Full disclosure: I’m shaking as I type this.
