On New Year’s Eve, my dad shot some photos that woke me back up. I’d fallen into some kind of slump and lost track of why photography is, usually, near the center of my life. Seeing the world through a camera is a limitless education in how to see, how to notice beauty hiding in plain sight, how to make familiar objects new.

My first thinking act of 2010 was to grab my camera on my way out the door Friday morning. The images posted here represent some of what I noticed as I walked through Ballard with our dog.

All of these photos are too fresh. I don’t know how I’ll feel about any of them in a week. I’m not trying to promote myself or the site I use to sell my photography. I’m evangelizing, I guess.

For photography.

For the idea that you should grab a camera on your way out the door this morning. Even if it’s just built in to your phone. Even if you’re out of film, out of memory cards, out of batteries. Just bring the camera and look through it. Look often. Reframe your world. Notice. It’s a great way to live.
