I got a reminder today of the power of bringing along someone new to visit a place you’ve seen many times. Today’s “someone new” was one of my cousins. He’s roughly half my age and in the middle of an adventure I’ll probably never attempt: a meandering Greyhound bus trip across America. We don’t know each other very well yet, but he was kind to call me and arrange to meet up while he’s here.
We met at Seattle Center, walked to a tasty lunch at Noodle Ranch in Belltown, walked some more and took in the waterfront view from a public rooftop I’d never seen before, walked to see the Richard Serra at the Olympic Sculpture Park, and doubled back, continuing on to the Central Library. It’s an extraordinary building. I know that. But I’m used to it.
My cousin is not used to it. He marveled at the place. Soon, I was marveling, too. I was seeing things I’d never seen — antique books in a research room at the top of the building, all sorts of reflections in the exterior windows. Soon I had my camera out. See above.
