I’m about to get my first Nathan Englander book purely on the strength of his storytelling in this appearance at The Moth. It’s called “Man on the Moon” and it chronicles Englander’s experience in 1996 as an idealistic American who moves to Jerusalem so he won’t miss out on experiencing the seemingly imminent, inevitable arrival of durable peace in the Middle East.
“Basically, I was sure everyone was going to be holding hands from Baghdad to Tel Aviv,” Englander tells the crowd.
The story takes just about 12 minutes. But it’s told so memorably and efficiently. Do check it out.
